Om de snelheid van het schip te meten, moest men het log ofwel 14 ofwel 28 seconden laten lopen. Er bestonden mariene zandlopers van 14 of 28 sec (snelheidsmeting) en van 30, 60 of 120 minuten (voor tijdmeting aan boord).

Hourglass, Glass and Brass, used as Log-glass with 14 or 28 sec duration. It times the period for measuring the shipsspeed with the classic shipslog, measuring the speed in knots, that passed the hand of a sailor in 14 ( 28) seconds.
In the lid we find the inscriptions 1827 and 14. Can be closed by rotation of the inner cylinder. Orange collared Silicate.
