Het Penkompas diende voor het noteren van de kompaskoers en afstand die tijdens een wacht van 4 uur werd gezeild. In gebruik was van 1500 tot de 1900s. De wacht zette elke half uur de koers in tijdens de vier uur durende wacht en noteerde per uur onderaan de afgelegde afstand (= snelheid in knopen). Nadien werd met de kapitein het ‘Gegist bestek’ uitgezet op de kaart.

Pelorus or Pinncompass or Transverse board, for noting the course and distance sailed during a watch. In use from 1500 to the 1900’s. The watch set the course every half-hour during the four-hour watch and noted the distance travelled per hour and measured with the log, in the lower panel.
