De oorspronkelijke eerste Spaanse editie van dit boek dateert uit 1545. Het is het eerste en meteen ook één van de belangrijkste werken over navigeren op zee. Het boek werd meermaals vertaald, zelfs door de Antwerpenaar Coignet naar het Nederlands.
In zijn aanvulling, ‘Nieuwe onderwijsinge’, beschrijft hij o.a. zijn vernieuwde Jakobsstaf met drie vleugels.
Coignet’s most important publication, was a supplement to the Dutch translation of the Pedro de Medina ‘s Arte de Navigar, by M. Everaert.
This first edition was a year later followed by a French translation which was important in the England ( only one edition). The Dutch edition appeared three more times, in 1589, 1592and 1598.
In this book the use of three transoms for the Cross-staff was for the first time described. He describes the method of Gemma Frisius and the use of the astrolabe with an extra arc for the declination
He also explained his method for the longitude problem and constructed the ‘Zeesfeer’
