Een dipnaald is net als een conventioneel kompas, maar in plaats van het horizontaal vast te houden, wordt de naald verticaal gehouden. Het is een magnetische naald die wordt gebruikt voor navigatiedoeleinden, net als een kompas, maar vooral gebruikt wordt bij reizen rond de noord- en zuidpool.

Dip circles (also dip needles) are used to measure the angle between the horizon and the Earth's magnetic field (the dip angle). They were used in surveying, mining and prospecting as well as for the demonstration and study of magnetism.
