Uit "Nova Reperta", plaat nr. 2 : Rechts zittend, zichtbaar in profiel, Flavio Amalfitano aan zijn bureau, die een kompas meet terwijl hij een boek leest; een globe en een zandloper op zijn bureau en een hond aan zijn voeten; tegenover hem, zwevend op lucht, een zeilschip en onder een ander bureau met boeken en een astrolabiumglobe; een grote container gevuld met vloeistof en een magnetische steen in het midden, zichtbaar links op de voorgrond.

Flavio Gioia or Biondo from Amalfi is credited with inventing the compass.
