To measure a ship’s speed, the log glass was run for either 14 or 28 seconds. Marine sandglasses existed for 14 or 28 seconds (speed measurement) and for 30, 60, or 120 minutes (timekeeping on board).

Hourglass, Glass and Brass, used as Log-glass with 14 or 28 sec duration. It times the period for measuring the shipsspeed with the classic shipslog, measuring the speed in knots, that passed the hand of a sailor in 14 ( 28) seconds.

In the lid we find the inscriptions 1827 and 14. Can be closed by rotation of the inner cylinder. Orange collared Silicate.
