Description

World chart mapping James Cook's three voyages through the South Seas and the Pacific, delineating many of the area's previously unknown coastlines, though it is interesting that much of North America's west coast remained unknown. The chart on Mercator's projection also plots the tracks of Phipps' voyage to the North Pole reaching north of Spitsbergen. This is the scarce first edition, the chart is more commonly seen in its reissue, some 30 years later, by James Wyld who succeeded to William Faden's business. A fascinating sheet with the poignant inscription in the mid-Pacific, "OWhyhee where Capt. Cook was Kill'd"
