Description

Highly popular work on the art of navigation by the Dutch mathematician Klaas Hendriksz. Gietermaker (1621-1699), first published in 1660. In 1661 Gietermaker was employed as examiner for new helmsmen for the Dutch East India Company (VOC). The book discusses all the kinds of problems and difficulties the pupils had to solve at examinations and while piloting a ship. In 1660 he publishes the work De vier boeken van 't vergulde licht der Zeevaart of de konst der Stuurlieden; the publisher is again Hendrick Doncker. Giettermaker signs all copies by hand; Claes Heijndricksz. Guitarist. He concludes the preface with: 'U Ed. Achtbaare Onderdanighste Dienaer, Claes Hendriksz Giettermaker Leer-meester der Navigation.' The work will be published at least seven more times. After Giettermaker's death in July 1668, Hendrick Doncker acquired the the rights. In 1693 the rights are acquired by Johannes Van Keulen.
