Alexandre Savérien (1720-1805), a naval engineer and author of numerous treatises on maritime science, challenges the existing theories on ship maneuvering. Despite his desire to advance navigation and help pilots, he was subject to much criticism and ended up in poverty. Glued on the false title, monogrammed bookplate of Charles Messier (1730-1817), famous astronomer member of the Academy of Sciences, author of the Messier catalog, a reference for comet hunters. Binding slightly rubbed, 2 jaws cracked, top cover shaved.
