Description

1599 third or later edition from the P28 This map describes the Peripli or the greek type of routers, with the voyages of Odiseus (in Ulysse) and the Carthagener Hannon. Unlike the Theatrum, which consisted of existing maps re-engraved by Ortelius, the maps in the Parergon were drawn by Ortelius himself. As a scholar of antiquity, a dealer in antiques, and a visitor to ancient sites, he was well prepared to execute the maps and all the maps from the Parergon reflect his passion for the ancient world. From the third edition, with the text in Latin, published by Plantin who took over the publication of Ortelius' landmark atlas in 1579. 'Plantin printed slightly fewer than 800 copies of the third edition' (Van der Krogt).
