Description

Early description of the Cross-Staff. Metius worked with Thyco Brahe. 5 parts in 1 volume. 4º. With astronomical or geographical woodcut figures on 5 title-pages and numerous astronomical and geographical woodcut illustrations, figures and tables in text. Contemporary vellum. Rare collected edition of Dutch astronomical and geographical text books by Adrianus Metius (1571–1635), professor in mathematics, navigation, surveying and astronomy at Franeker from 1600. The five parts treat the production and use of a terrestrial globe, an astrolabe, a compass, a quadrant and other navigational instruments, and give the unpaginated “Tabulae Romborum” (rhumb-tables) used to correct the deviation of sailing routes and exercises for remedying various navigational faults.
